Stakeholder Workshop on WNTD 2025

On 29 May 2025, the State Tobacco Control Cell (STCC) and Uttar Pradesh Voluntary Health Association (UPVHA) organized a State-Level Workshop in Lucknow to mark World No Tobacco Day. The event focused on raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and strengthening the enforcement of tobacco control laws in Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. Kavita Arya, Director Health, Government of Uttar Pradesh, presided over the event and emphasized the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in building a tobacco-free society. Dr. Mukesh Matenhelia, State Nodal Officer (NTCP), opened the workshop by outlining the purpose of the day and the urgent need for mass awareness.

Key speakers including Dr. Ramashankar Yadav, Mr. M.P. Singh (Police), and Dr. Ankit Kumar highlighted the link between tobacco use and serious illnesses such as TB and cancer, while stressing the need for behavioural change and strict law enforcement. Dr. Arvind Srivastava discussed the mental health implications of tobacco use among youth, calling for school-based programs. Dr. Amit Yadav gave a detailed overview of COTPA 2003, urging effective implementation of its key sections.

Representatives from the FSDA, Education Department, and various NGOs joined the event, reinforcing the call for inter-departmental collaboration. The workshop concluded with a pledge by all participants to promote tobacco control, refrain from its use, and support others in quitting.
